Author Spotlight: H.K. Sterling

    Review By: Unknown Genre: »

Today I have the honor and pleasure of interviewing H.K. Sterling who is the author of several books including A Taste for Killing (Chasing the Taste Book 1), A Taste For Danger (Chasing the Taste Book 2) and many others. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer some questions about you and your work.

What name(s) do you write under?
I have two names, one K.D. Rose I use for literary works and poetry, as well as new adult material. The other, H.K. Sterling is for 18+ and is much more noir oriented.

What helped you choose your pseudonym(s)?
The first one contains part of my name and the last name is a family name. The second one was just out of my head.

    Where are you from?
Virginia- where I still live, though I lived in California for 11 years too (and still miss it).

What is the name of your most recent book and where can we find it?
A Taste For Danger is my latest book. It is the sequel to A Taste For Killing though both are also stand-alone books.

    What's your latest release about?
The series centers on two detectives. The latest one spotlights the male detective.

What genre would you consider it?
They are both mystery/suspense/romance. The short story (Flirt) I wrote for my publisher is also a suspense/romance.

What or who inspired you to start writing?
I've been a voracious reader since I was very young so all of that was imbued into me.

Who are your biggest literary influences?
Harlan Ellison, Neil Gaiman, Robert Heinlein, Philip K Dick. Mostly Science Fiction writers.

    When did you start writing?
I've been writing all my life, including in journals, etc. I just started putting it all together to publish though starting in 2012.

Do you work with a single publisher, multiple publishers or do you self-publish?
I have books under two publishers and also independent books. I am open to multiple publishers but I need to write some more first!

Do you write full-time or do you have another vocation at the same time?
When I started publishing I had a full time job outside of writing, so writing was relegated to evenings and weekends.

If you had to give advice to yourself early on, what advice would you give an aspiring author?
Learn the tools of the trade, then write your heart out. Then edit ruthlessly.

Do you have a favorite character or characters of your own? What makes him/her/them your favorite?
There is a character named Eddie in my current book. He's not the lead, but he's quirky and lovable so he's kind of my favorite just because he was fun to write.

I've read that an author should only write what they know about personally, do you think that's true for most genres?
To a degree maybe, but with research available I don't think it's required. That's what imagination is for!
